Gualala and the Mendocino Coast
Our two beach houses sit just north of Sea Ranch in Gualala, on a wild and rural stretch of the Mendocino Coast. Deer, foxes and large birds wander the properties, whales breach offshore, and sheep graze above the cliffs. Be prepared to enjoy the unexpected!
Where to eat and drink
- Anchor Bay Thai Kitchen (opens in a new tab) is very close to the houses, is reliably delicious, and is open every day of the week except Monday.
- St. Orres, a short walk away, is a beautiful building and charming bar with great cocktails, including a gin & tonic that comes in a punchbowl glass. For food, we like the bar menu and usually order the chile relleno.
- Pier Place (opens in a new tab) in Point Arena is a classic dockside chowder house reimagined as California boat-to-table cuisine. Friendly, unpretentious and always very tasty.
- Izakaya Gama (opens in a new tab) in Point Arena makes handmade contemporary Japanese dishes from local ingredients. Reserve if you can; sometimes it's too full for walk-ins.
- Little Dory (opens in a new tab), a couple of doors south of Gama in Point Arena, sells the local catch, oysters and other seafood to cook at home. Usually open Friday through Sunday.
- Franny's Cup and Saucer (opens in a new tab) in Point Arena is a lovely, thoughtful bakery full of irresistible treats. Cash only.
- Trinks (opens in a new tab) in Gualala is our pick for a leisurely morning coffee, with a very good hot breakfast and gourmet provisions.
- Gualala Seafood Shack (opens in a new tab), Upper Crust Pizza and Sea Ranch Lodge (opens in a new tab) are great choices too, and a little further up the road in Elk are Maritime Cafe and the Michelin-starred Harbor House Inn (opens in a new tab).
